Chapter 13

“So...let me get this straight.” Jareth materialized from behind the wall of vampire guards. “You plan to join my son in his quest to protect Tessa as she tries to unite the underworld in an attempt to band us all so we might fight side by side to help stave off the horrors leaking into our world through the torn veil?”

“Yes.”

“And you’re not here to kill me?”

“Er, no.”

“Or my wife?” he added after receiving a sharp elbow to the ribs.

“No.”

“Pinky swear?” With a hopeful look in his eye, he twitched his little finger.

“Father!” Isaac cut in, his mortification on full display. Man, he warned me about this, but I had no idea. His parents seemed like kind, wonderful, caring people. But their cowardice was truly next level. “Please, you and Mom just go sit somewhere. Literally anywhere else but here. You’re both safe, I promise. Just stay out of the way while we sort this out, okay?” Ashamed, Jareth took Rosalyn by the hand and led her away. The wall of guards funneled out behind them, leaving the rest of us alone in the throne room.

“What is there to discuss?” Kyle leaned back against the wall, arms folded across his chest. “You need my help and I have nothing better to do. Seems pretty cut and dry to me.”

“Indeed,” Isaac said with a slow nod. “It seems you are little more than a demon rogue these days. It’s not like you have anywhere to be.” Okay, not exactly a ringing endorsement. I flashed Isaac a pleading look. I knew he didn’t like the idea, but Kyle had proven himself to be a powerful ally. We needed all the help we could get. Thinking the same thing, he dropped his hands with a sigh. “Lucky for you, Tessa seems to have a soft spot for strays.”

With as much humility as he could muster, Kyle smiled and nodded his head. “Thank you. All of you.” His eyes swept around the room. “I hope my talents will prove useful over the coming days and weeks.”

“Weeks,” Isaac muttered under his breath. Even he couldn’t believe what he had just agreed to.

“Then it’s settled,” I chimed in, putting on my brightest grin to help lift the tension. It didn’t work. Like, not at all. “Hey guys, come on.” I clapped and kicked up one foot like a Sweet Valley High cheerleader. “We can do this. I know we can. All for one and one for—” Oh man, I was just digging this hole deeper and deeper. Was it getting hot in here or...

“Well, I don’t know about you guys, but I feel better now,” Lenora said, rolling her eyes at me. “Teamwork it is, then. Of course you have a plan, right?”

“Um...yeah. I’m still working on that part.” Wow, did she have to steal my thunder so quickly?

“Well then, why don’t we all get some rest?” She rapped on my forehead with her knuckles. “Give those little wheels a chance to start turning. I’m sure you’ll have put together something genius and mind blowing by morning.
